Message From the Traffic Committee

TRAFFIC CAMERAS HAVE BEEN INSTALLED We have noticed that traffic cameras have been installed in the streets around our school. While Stonnington Council has not advised us of this, we do believe this is a Stonnington Council initiative (we have information that they are not police-installed CCTV cameras) to get a greater understanding of the on-going traffic issues around drop off and pick up. This is a two-edged sword. We have been dealing with Stonnington Council for a very long time around the issue of frustrated and angry residents being negatively impacted by our school community’s driving and parking. This has now become a very long and protracted issue however we are continuing to work hard to get a positive outcome for both the TPS community and our neighbours. But we need ALL of our school community to COMMIT TO IMPROVED DRIVING AND PARKING. We need to show that we are driving safely and legally, and treating our neighbours with respect. If we do not – this will have a long lasting and negative impact on our ability to reach a resolution which benefits us. We believe there will be an increased presence of parking officers during this period of investigation as well as the chance that vehicles operating illegally – as seen via the cameras – could be fined. We are also communicating with Brookville Kinder about this issue too. Following are some tips which we hope everyone will follow. DON’T. 1. Do not park in any driveways. Consider how you would feel if you found someone blocking you from leaving or entering your own home. 2. Do not park illegally. Apart from the opportunity you might create for yourself in receiving a parking fine, you are hindering the flow of traffic and safety of our children. 3. Do not stop your car in the middle of the road and let your children out of the car. This is both illegal and unsafe. 4. Do not park on the ‘wrong’ side of the road. This is both illegal and a traffic hazard. 5. Do not stay longer than five minutes in the “five-minute drop-off zones” on Fairbairn Road. While you are entitled to get out of your car or park and say goodbye to your child(ren) with a last minute kiss and cuddle, this does not mean leaving your car for any longer than 5 minutes. There is room for approximately five cars at a time and this will assist greatly in traffic flow and efficient school drop off. 6. Do not stop (even with the car motor running) in the “No Stopping” zones. This is illegal and will potentially earn you a fine. DO 1. Park legally and safely and come into the school grounds and be part of our fabulous school community. 2. For a quick drop off, use the “No Parking” zone in Brookville Road which is an unofficial kiss and drop zone. This means you can stop your car for 2 minutes, and allow your child(ren) to leave (or get into) the car safely on the school side of the road. There is room for approximately 3 cars. Please only stay for the allocated 2 minutes to allow other parents to drop off or collect their children in a timely and orderly manner. 3. Talk to your neighbours and see if there is an opportunity to create a ‘walking bus’ to get your children safely to school. It’s also an invigorating way to start the day. 4. Do park considerately even when parking legally. 5. Refresh yourself with VicRoads parking rules https://www.vicroads.vic.gov.au/safety-and-road-rules/road-rules/a-to-z-of-road-rules/parking#can-i-park-here 6. If you have some thoughts about ways we can improve traffic flow and congestion, please email the school with “Constructive Traffic and Parking Comments and Suggestions” in the subject line or leave your comments – anonymously if you wish – at the front desk in the Suggestions Box.
