On Thursday July 23, Grade 4 travelled to the Melbourne Museum and went to the ‘Melbourne Story’ exhibit first. There we saw important parts of Melbourne’s history such as; Phar Lap, old houses, an old fashioned cinema, the Luna Park roller coaster. There was a living room, a radio with broadcasts from the past, energy production and a model of the goldfields. It reminded us of how people lived back then.
We then moved on to the guided ‘First People’s’ exhibit also known as ‘Bunjilarka’ or the Place of Bunjil. We were given Ipads which we used to take photos and sound recordings of the things we learnt about or found interesting. Some of the interesting things we saw were; indigenous toys, fire sticks, possum cloaks, traps, weapons and shields, a canoe, clothing. Inside Bunjil’s Nest we saw a light and sound show about Bunjil the eagle who created everything.
After Lunch, we walked through the Forest Gallery area. There we saw native plants and creatures. We saw a huntsman spider and some bull ants. We went to an area that overlooked the park.
We headed back into the museum and went through the dinosaur and marine life exhibit. We saw many amazing things like; dinosaur fossils, a short video about a pterodactyl, preserved sea creatures, a whale skeleton and a giant squid!
The last exhibit we went to was dedicated to bugs, it was called ‘Bugs Alive’. We saw spiders in a web, flying ants and ants in a maze. We could smell different things bugs ate and produced. There were even different kinds of cockroaches and spiders on display, some of them were terrifying!
