PE and Sports Update

There has been loads of sporting and physical activities going on at TPS of late! Here is a rundown of what’s been happening over the last month of term three and the beginning of term four.

Basketball Play-offs
In the final weeks of term three a team of 5/6 TPS boys basketballers played against South Yarra. Catching a tram down to Fawkner Park was half the fun! A special thanks to Stuart Burriss and Seth Burriss (an ex TPS student) who volunteered to ref the game and thank you to Connor’s dad Peter who assisted coaching on the day.

Tennis
This week will conclude the four weeks of tennis that we have had from P-6 at TPS. A really big thank you for Jon and Jack at Victorian Tennis Academy based at Orrong Road for coaching the students. They had a lot to offer and students really enjoyed their sessions and I also learnt a lot! They are offering a free trial lesson to anyone interested in Tennis, please see: http://victennisacademy.com.au/free-trial/ for more info. They have been wonderful to work with and I highly recommend their services. It was great that a number of students were already coached by them too.

P-2 Swimming
Swimming lessons for Foundation to Grade 2 students at Klim Swim have commenced at the St Kilda East swimming pool. This will continue for ten weeks, occurring each Friday. Students will catch a bus to the venue 30 minutes prior to their lesson and then return, leaving 15 minutes after their lesson. Thanks to the students and teachers for running to the tight schedule, with over 250 students participating it is a very time sensitive mission each Friday.

Tee Ball State final
Congratulations to our new State Champions! After training three times a week since May, the following students competed in a number of games to reach the state final and beat the opposition at Jells Park in September. Well done to Josie, Eloise, Ziya, Pia, Lily, Sami, Emma, Izabella, Sophia and Kaaya. The coaching led by Andy Patterson and supported by Josie was very much appreciated and set a very good example of what students can achieve by training often and being very dedicated to a sport. The same team will participate in the softball regional finals this week and we have high hopes that they will continue to do well at such a high level as they are very deserving of their efforts.

Athletics Carnival
We had 23 students compete at the Athletics Carnival at Lakeside Stadium in September at the Beachside Aths Comp. A very special mention to a Mak Sok who was the superstar of the day, placing first in the hurdles, 100 metre sprint and the relay. Tom Templeton also came first in the triple jump and the relay. Mak and Tom will compete in their individual events and the relay team made up of Alex, Daniel, Mak and Tom have competed at the Southern Metropolitan Regional competition on Thursday and we wish them well.

Softball Grant
TPS has received another federally funded grant through the Sporting Schools initiative. We plan to have Softball Victoria come out to our school for four sessions this term and we will also receive an equipment package. Dates to be confirmed at this stage.

Hooptime Regionals
We wish the following 5/6 girls well at the Hooptime regional finals. Representing TPS will be Ella, Eloise, Josie, Kat, Ruby, Kaaya, Lily, Pia, Matilda and Emma at MSAC on Tuesday. I know it is an event they have trained very hard for to progress through to the next stage and they have set a wonderful example to their peers through their dedication to sport over their time at TPS, led by Stuart Buriss.

Boys Softball and Girls softball regional competition
Thanks to Mr Andy Patterson who will take the 5/6 boys and girls to the softball regional championships on Tuesday and Friday of this week. We wish both teams well and thank Andy and Joise for all the training sessions they have run during lunchtimes over the last two terms.

3/4  soccer gala day
All grade three and four students will participate in the soccer gala day this Friday, versing students from five schools in our region. Throughout the day students will rotate around and compete in short games of soccer and return to school around 3pm.

TPS students doing well in sport
A number of our students have done very well in sport outside of the school setting and I wanted to make sure they get a mention.
Alexander Bushby who plays for the under 12s Malvern hockey club recently competed in his hockey final where his team drew in the Grand Final.
Dimitri who plays tennis with Parkdale and was previously ranked 8th in Australia in 2017 for his age group (and trains for tennis seven days a week including for competition, social and coaching) played in the Victorian clay court junior championships and received Runner Up in the singles event. Congratulations Dimitri, he has another competition this week, playing in the 14/15 age group and we wish him continued success.
A number of students at TPS have been trying out for rep level teams at Melbourne Tigers, Waverley Falcons and Hawthorn Magic. Some students that have tried out for these teams include: Marli, Felix, Apollo, Hugo, Robbie, James, Charlie and Jayziah.

Teacher Games
Over the term break a number of teachers including Mr Jones, Miss M, Ms S, Miss White, Miss Sel, Miss Wren and Miss Saxby competed in the Teachers Games in Ballarat. We played lawn bowls, dodgeball and netball and despite returning with no medals we had a very enjoyable couple of days.

Melbourne Marathon
A number of TPS teachers competed in the Melbourne Marathon events over the weekend. Well done and congratulations to Mr Golden who competed the 42km event and Miss Syme-Ross who competed in the half marathon and to Miss Wren, Miss Saxby, Miss Milligan and Miss Segrave who competed in the shorter distances.
